Milan, April 1st 2016 - At the forthcoming XXI Triennale International Exhibition Milan, BONOTTOEDITIONS will present an outsize tapestry portraying world cultures through the hands of experts and the eyes of young people.
21st Century. Design after Design. The Triennale International Exhibition is back with 21 exhibits: New Craft – curated by Stefano Micelli and presented at La Fabbrica del Vapore – is a project aiming to highlight the virtuous encounter between technologic innovation and manufacturing excellence.
Among the selected artists we find BONOTTOEDITIONS, a brand taking its roots from Bonotto Spa, a textile company well known among Italian manufacturing firms for its understanding of modern time and trends and its combination of technology and artisanal expertise.
BONOTTOEDITIONS presents Atlas, a giant 25-meter square tapestry created using the ancient artisanal techniques of 1950 Japanese mechanical looms. Its creation required more that a thousand hours of work from the masters of art in the Slow Factory. The tapestry is 7-meter high and envelops an empty cylinder, hanging from the ceiling of the exhibit entrance.
Several materials have been employed to create Atlas: cellophane from old movies films, washi – the paper used to make Japanese traditional origamis, primitive Zimbabwe cotton and wild silk from Guandong, painted and handmade sprayed fettuccine, horse leather cords. Everything blends and combines with the setting, creating new synergies and fascinating games of colors and materials.
This is an innovative project, an unconventional and unique piece, a manifesto for the modern reality and its new generations. Atlas represents a map of the earth that uses symbolism and local sceneries to portray a sort of imaginary – but also real – journey of new generations, the millennials. It embodies the extraordinary cultural melting pot of our time, which is the result of a new way of living and interacting with each other: the cultural nomadism that makes us all inhabitants of one single space-territory.
Atlas is a mix of heritage, technology and innovation: it creates three-dimensionality and different textures that bring this tapestry to an unexpected level of creativity.
